It can only be described as a love affair. Many women have experienced the chance encounter with perfection, the pure appreciation for beauty, and have thrown caution to the wind for the absolute perfect… shoe.
For Sarah Woodworth and her mother, Janet Schwartz, the love affair was with a ladies shoe and clothing boutique named Monkee’s. The story began many years ago in Winston-Salem, NC when Janet was travelling to see her son at Wake Forest University. After that very first visit, Janet claimed Monkee’s was “the classiest shoe store she’d ever shopped in,” and just had to share the experience with her daughter.
A Lexington native, Sarah had dreamed of owning a boutique since she was in high school. “I’ve always loved the intimate shopping experience and the option to have shoes, clothing and accessories very few others will have. I also really wanted a creative outlet and the opportunity to be my own boss,” explained Sarah.
Two years ago, Sarah started the discussion with her parents and husband about finally making her store a reality. Her father had always been very supportive of the idea, but soon became ill and the dream was put on hold. After he passed, Sarah and her mother decided to pursue their dream in his memory.
“With my love of fashion and shopping, I wanted to bring the Monkee’s experience home. Monkee’s is such a well-known and respected name in the retail world and now Lexington gets to experience the ‘experience’,” said Sarah.
Monkee’s of Lexington will carry new and exciting designer labels of shoes, clothing and accessories. The store, in a quaint cottage at 116 Clay Avenue, will feature a wide variety of styles and price ranges. The fashionable owners are most excited to introduce Butter shoes and Maren clothing to Lexington. “Butter shoes are vintage-inspired, chic and feminine, and Maren skirts are classic and preppy, yet so sassy!” explained Sarah.
After years of anticipation and months of planning, Monkee’s of Lexington will open the doors with a Grand Opening Celebration on Thursday, September 8, 2011. Festivities will include a Sylvia Benson Jewelry Trunk Show, and an official FRYE Trunk Show where customers will meet the rep, and be entered to win a free pair of FRYE Harness boots or a handbag. The vision for their boutique includes an emphasis on customer service, in a fun and intimate atmosphere.
“I see Monkee’s of Lexington as my customer’s home away from home. A welcoming place to enjoy a cup of coffee and a laid back shopping experience,” said Sarah.
